Building Environmental Education – B.E.E

The primary objective of B.E.E is to refurbish the older building using cutting-edge environmental materials and practices, transforming it into a premier education showcase. Through meticulous attention to sustainable design principles, renewable materials, and eco-friendly construction techniques, we aim to set a new standard for environmentally conscious refurbishment projects. By documenting and sharing our experiences, challenges, and successes, we seek to inspire and educate other building sites on the benefits and feasibility of integrating sustainability into their own renovation endeavors.

B.E.E strives to serve as a dynamic hub of environmental education and innovation, offering immersive learning experiences for visitors, stakeholders, and industry professionals alike. Our objective is to develop interactive exhibits, workshops, and guided tours that highlight the environmental features, technologies, and methodologies incorporated into the refurbishment process. The Genesis of B.E.E

In the heart of St Kilda, amid the hustle and bustle of urban life, emerged a vision born from a profound reverence for the past and a steadfast commitment to the future. The genesis of The Living Venue project,  now the Building Environmental Education (B.E.E) began as a whisper among the weathered facade and fading curtains of an aging facility, where echoes of performances past mingled with the anticipation of what lay ahead. It was here, within the hallowed walls of the Alex Theatre, that a creative revolution took root—a revolution fueled by a fervent desire to reimagine the possibilities of sustainability and environmental stewardship in the realm of entertainment and cultural expression. What started as a humble endeavor to breathe new life into an old building soon blossomed into a bold exploration of green building techniques, renewable energy systems, and innovative design solutions. With each stroke of imagination and every beam of sunlight filtered through resolute windows, The Living Venue emerged as a beacon of hope—a testament to the transformative power of creativity, community, and conscious living. In the dappled glow of twilight, the stage was set for a new chapter in the storied history of the Alex Theatre—a chapter defined not by its age, but by its unwavering dedication to sustainability, resilience, and the timeless magic of the arts.

Commercial

The commercial spaces within the complex serve as vibrant hubs of economic activity and innovation, where sustainable design principles are woven into the fabric of daily operations. Through efficient resource management, green procurement practices, and eco-friendly infrastructure, commercial enterprises become champions of sustainability, driving economic growth while minimizing environmental impact.

Residential

In the residential spaces of the complex, sustainable design fosters a sense of community and belonging while prioritizing occupant comfort and well-being. From passive solar design to green rooftops and rainwater harvesting systems, residential units embody principles of sustainability, offering residents a sanctuary that nurtures both mind and body within a harmonious urban environment.

A Multistorey Car Park

Within the multistorey car park, sustainable design transcends the traditional notion of parking facilities, transforming them into dynamic nodes of sustainable transportation and urban connectivity. Through electric vehicle charging stations, bicycle amenities, and green infrastructure, the car park becomes a gateway to sustainable mobility, reducing emissions and promoting active transportation options within the community.

Redesigning how we think about aging structures involves embracing innovation, sustainability, and purpose-driven transformation. It’s about reimagining the potential of older buildings, breathing new life into their timeworn bones, and infusing them with modern concepts of functionality and environmental consciousness.

We’re proud to call our residents and tenants our community. We’re committed to creating a sustainable environment where we can all live, work, and play comfortably while minimizing our impact on the planet.

As part of this commitment, we’re exploring several exciting upgrades to our building, aligning with our existing maintenance schedule and guided by our vision of “Restoring the Past, Building the Future.” This vision encourages us to embrace the history of our building while fostering a culture of environmental awareness and innovation.

Sustainable Building Envelope

This area covers the building’s exterior and interior, considering every aspect of the building’s shell. We’ll be looking at sustainable options for paint types, façade materials, downpipes, windows, doors, design features, and flooring/walling/ceiling materials. These upgrades will be aligned with our 15-year maintenance plan for the site, ensuring long-term sustainability and responsible resource management.

Roofing Innovations

We see our roof as more than just a protective layer. Its unique multi-level design offers exciting possibilities for innovation that can benefit the entire building. While rainwater harvesting and solar energy capture are a starting point, we’re actively exploring even more sustainable solutions. Green roofs and other cutting-edge concepts are on the table, and we’re eager to investigate their potential to transform our rooftop space.

Water & Energy Efficiency

We understand that water and electricity are the lifeblood of our building. Just like the human body, we’re committed to optimizing these systems for better health and efficiency. This includes installing low-flow water fixtures and implementing an energy-efficient lighting system throughout the building. However, it doesn’t stop there. We’re also exploring the integration of building management systems that monitor water usage, energy consumption, and even traffic flow (people, pets, vehicles). This data will allow us to further refine our sustainability efforts and create a more efficient and comfortable environment for everyone.

Harnessing Renewable Energy

We’re excited about the potential of solar panels to transform our building into a clean energy producer. This will not only reduce our reliance on the grid but also create a more sustainable ecosystem within the building. However, our vision extends beyond solar. We’re actively researching new technologies and innovative methods to create a truly sustainable environment. High-energy areas like the entertainment complex will be a prime focus for implementing these advancements, ensuring efficient energy use throughout the building.
